Course Due Dates and Assignments
We are over halfway
through the Summer Session of the Multisensory Math Course. Our
first round of video conferences have concluded and everyone should be through
day 3 or 4 of the videos.
The second half of
the course work contains some of the most complex work in the course. It
is also some of the most important. As you saw in the opening day's
presentation, many of our students with learning challenges begin to fail
before third grade testing. That said, test scores reveal that
multiplication/division and fraction/decimal concept present significant
hurdles for many students, especially those with disabilities.
Do not rush through
the work on multiplication and division or fractions. The language of
fraction concepts and operations is among the most specific in the
course. You will need to work through this slowly and perhaps play some
of the video sections again while taking notes. We will also make sure
that we go over the fraction operations with manipulatives during the second
round of video conferences. I have also placed extra video
conference recordings of fraction proportional reasoning in your play
list. If you teach fractions, you should view one or more of those
videos and take notes on the explicit language.
You will find that no
one single model of fractions is sufficient and that students need multiple
models and lots of practice to actually understand fraction concepts and be
able to reason with them.
Our course video access
will end on September 16th. You will have an additional week to
turn in any assignments and projects.
If you are taking the
course for CEU credits only, your due dates are the same as everyone else but
you may complete your work earlier. You have less to do though I would
expect you to complete all videos, video activities and video conference
requirements. Do not believe that you can fully understand the content of
this course by simply watching the videos. You need to practice with the
on-site class to be able to implement the strategies effectively.
The exam will be
emailed to all class participants about a week before the end of the class.
Usually the exam is emailed and participants have two weeks to turn in
assignments.
